Egrets, I've had a few . . .

. . . but then again . . .

. . . not many that kiss to form a hexagon!

The duck saga continues...

We discovered the nest as close as it possibly could be to our building on Mothers Day.

When mom would take a break nearby . . .

. . . she would leave the dozen eggs exposed.

But when she left to go farther away . . .

. . . she would cover them with down and sticks to keep them insulated and hidden.

On May 31, nine of the eggs hatched, and for a few hours the ducklings remained beneath her, though some finally became restless.

The first two finally wandered out, but stayed very close.

Finally, they all wandered out, but four became separated for a few minutes.

Since they couldn't climb, mom took the rest down to reunite with them.

She's not shy about warning intruders.

When it began to rain, she kept them all dry.

The proud dad cools off.

Loren at Yellowstone

Here's my son Loren in front of one of the thermal features, a steaming cauldron, at Yellowstone National Park.

I didn't realize it was the first national park in the world when founded back in 1873.

Now covering more than 600,000 acres, the most famous thermal feature among dozens is Old Faithful, the geyser that sends up to 30' of water and steam into the air every 90 minutes or so.

Is it a bush? A rock? Nope. It's a duck!

A mother duck to be, incubating 14(!) eggs outside my office window at Clearr on Mothers' Day, 2009.

Snapshots of New York

I was in New York City this week for LightFair 2009, which was fantastic! Fortunately, I was able to get around town a bit, and snapped these photos:

Happy Mother's Day!

This weekend will be filled with cards, events, and much love for Mother's Day.  I'm taking my wife and sister out for dinner and a show on Saturday night, then joining lots of the family mothers at my mother-in-law's house for a late brunch on Sunday.

Interesting Reflections

India's seemingly differing eye colors are not a computer creation--they are the result of a photographic phenomenon caused by the flash reflecting from the respective retinas at slightly different angles!

I'm not talking about the country...I'm talking about my cat, India. I think her picture is perfect for one of our backlit signs, with light shining through her eyes: one pink, one green.

I have another cat photo I took on a rainy night in Mexico last year that has a bunch of cats with red and green eyes shining in the dark, and reflected in a puddle.
